ENLIGHTENED – Images of the Buddha

Mostra di arte buddista a Milano, Enlightened immagini del Buddha Opening Dalton Somare

A journey through Buddhist art

The exhibition “ENLIGHTENED – Images of the Buddha” traces the evolution of Buddhist iconography, from the earliest representations of the Enlightened One in Gandhara to the forms developed across the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia, and Tibet.

It is a journey across centuries and cultures, revealing the transformation of one of the most significant images in the history of art.

The Buddha and his meaning

The title Buddha, attributed to Siddhartha Gautama, the Sage of the Shakya clan, refers to one of the highest expressions of Asian philosophical and spiritual thought.

His teachings, founded on compassion, non-violence, detachment, and awareness, gave rise to one of the most influential spiritual traditions in the world.

According to tradition, Sakyamuni lived in the 6th century BCE and attained Enlightenment at the age of 35, achieving Nirvana — a transcendent state beyond desire and suffering.

From aniconism to image

For several centuries, the Buddha was not represented in human form: his presence was evoked through symbols such as the empty throne, footprints, or the Wheel of Dharma.

The first anthropomorphic representations appear around the 1st century CE in Gandhara, where Hellenistic culture, introduced by Alexander the Great, had left a lasting legacy.

In this context, the earliest images of the Buddha and Bodhisattvas emerge, along with narrative reliefs (jataka) created to decorate stupas.

Expansion and transformation of iconography

With the spread of Buddhism across the Indian subcontinent and, from the 5th–6th centuries onward, into Southeast Asia, Buddhist iconography evolved and diversified.

Each region developed its own aesthetic language while maintaining the essential symbolic elements associated with the figure of the Buddha.

This process culminates in the great sculptural traditions of Asia and in the bronzes created for the altars of Tibetan monasteries.

A fundamental chapter in the history of art

Taken as a whole, early Buddhist art represents one of the highest achievements of global artistic production and one of the most significant chapters in the history of human culture.

The exhibition presents a selection of emblematic works, offering insight into the richness and complexity of this tradition.
