BRAFA 2020 – African and Asian Art in Brussels

An exhibition between Africa, Asia and modernity

On the occasion of BRAFA Art Fair 2020, held at Tour & Taxis in Brussels, Dalton Somaré Gallery presented an exhibition conceived as a journey through classical African art and ancient Indo-Buddhist art, in dialogue with the avant-garde painting of the early 20th century.

The works on display, drawn from important private collections, were selected for their formal quality, historical relevance and their ability to express a universal aesthetic language.

The Highlights catalogue

The exhibition was accompanied by the catalogue Highlights, conceived as a reflection on collecting African and Asian art and on the dialogue between cultures, periods and visual languages.

The publication brings together a selection of works and proposes an approach to collecting based on an aesthetic and humanistic perspective, where beauty becomes the unifying principle between objects distant in time and space.

Within this framework, African and Asian art emerge as autonomous and complex visual languages, capable of engaging with contemporary sensibilities as well as with the broader history of art.

A vision of collecting

The project presented at BRAFA reflects the identity of the gallery: a research-driven approach focused on the selection of the highest quality works, going beyond conventional categories to reveal their aesthetic and cultural significance.

Through the dialogue between African art, Asian art and modern painting, the exhibition expresses a broad and inclusive vision of collecting, where works are understood within a network of relationships across time and geography.

Context of the Fair

BRAFA Art Fair is one of Europe’s key events for collecting, antiques and historic works of art. Dalton Somaré’s participation places African art and ancient Asian art within an international dialogue based on quality, provenance and art-historical research.

This news item belongs to the gallery’s path through international fairs and is connected with other BRAFA editions, the exhibitions archive and the catalogues published by Dalton Somaré.
