The architectural silhouettes that contour our exhibition of African Art reproduce those of the façade of a Milanese palace known as Ca’ Brütta.
Designed in 1921 by our great-grandfather, the architect Giovanni Muzio, the building was initially rejected for its reinterpretation of classicism—it was named, Ca’ Brütta, which means ugly house.
Nonetheless, within a few years, thanks to its radically innovative aesthetics it became the manifesto of the Italian Novecento Movement and one of Milan’s iconic visual landmarks.
Hosting an exhibition of African Art in this timeless, almost metaphysical setting has allowed us to reconnect to the cultural roots from which our Gallery emerged, while also highlighting the contributions to contemporary art made by artists still called primitive.
