African art and primitivism

African art and primitivism represent one of the most radical turning points in 20th-century art. Much like Rousseau’s “noble savage”, African art became a tool to challenge academic traditions and redefine artistic values.

At the beginning of the 20th century, artists such as the Fauves approached African art with limited knowledge but powerful intuition: recognising its formal strength and revolutionary potential.

Initially functional objects, these works were transformed through their encounter with European modernism, becoming part of a new visual language.

Understanding African art requires not only ethnographic knowledge but also a visual and cultural sensitivity shaped by modern art.

These works contributed to redefining Western art, particularly around 1907, when Picasso opened the way to a new conception of form. They stand at the intersection between African creativity and European recognition.
