The modelling of the face, wavy hair and surviving red and black pigments reveal an often overlooked dimension: Buddhist sculpture could combine volume and colour. Its present condition allows this relationship to be studied through surviving features, without arbitrarily reconstructing a complete painted scheme.

Comparison with Sakyamuni as a travelling monk, carved in schist and measuring 72 centimetres, brings two different processes into view. Stone is carved by subtraction, whereas stucco lends itself to modelling. In the schist image, the folds of the mantle cut into and articulate the figure’s volume. In the stucco Buddha, transitions between forehead, cheeks and mouth create a continuity of modelling to which colour adds further accents. The Buddhist subject and identifying signs are shared, while each surface is shaped by the possibilities of its material.

In his essay on Gandhara, Kurt Behrendt connects the extensive use of stucco with the expansion of Buddhist complexes between the third and mid-fifth centuries. The technique allowed faster production, the use of moulds and painted surfaces. This context helps explain the material in relation to architecture and patronage. Dating an individual work nevertheless requires chronology, form and material history to be considered together.

An identified museum comparison is the Metropolitan Museum’s Buddha head, accession 13.96.4, made of stucco with traces of paint and dated to around the fourth century. Surviving colour in another Gandharan image supports the study of polychromy as part of sculpture. The white of exposed stucco or the dark tone of schist does not automatically reproduce an object’s original appearance. Preserved traces provide specific evidence which comparison can help clarify.

The relationship with architecture is also evident in narrative reliefs such as the panel showing Mara’s assault. Its central figure and surrounding characters occupy a space designed to communicate an episode, while an independent image concentrates attention on the Buddha’s presence. Material, format and function distinguish different sculptural problems: modelling a face, articulating a robe or organising a scene. This approach restores the variety of Gandharan sculpture’s techniques and settings.

References and comparative works

Kurt Behrendt, “Gandhara”, Metropolitan Museum of Art, 2012.

Kurt Behrendt, The Art of Gandhara in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 2007.

Related insights

The art of Gandhara

The iconography of the Buddha

The Dalton Somaré Buddha in pigmented stucco, dated to the third–fourth century CE, offers a concrete starting point for understanding materials in Gandharan art.
