Wood, iron and resinous matter constitute the work, which measures 69.2 centimetres. Its collecting history includes Helena Rubinstein in New York and subsequent private collections. These records document the object’s life after leaving its original setting and provide a starting point for comparisons with museum examples.

Nkisi, plural minkisi, denotes a category broader than wooden figures alone. The Metropolitan Museum also documents containers, bundles and assemblages under this designation. Sculptures were produced through cooperation between the carver and the nganga, the ritual specialist responsible for the substances and actions that made the object effective. Carved form and ritual preparation thus involved complementary skills. The Metropolitan’s figure, accession 1979.206.127, with its combination of materials and packets, offers a useful comparison for understanding this collaboration.

Nkondi served in protection and the regulation of social relationships. Inserted metal elements could accompany oaths, agreements and requests for intervention. Their presence connects the surface of the sculpture to a succession of actions. In the Dalton Somaré example, the relationship between carved body and accumulated iron shows how the image remains recognisable as its surface changes. The combination of materials participates in constructing the figure’s authority, as well as defining its physical appearance.

The Metropolitan Museum’s Mangaaka, accession 2008.30, measuring 118 centimetres, documents a particular class of figures associated with administering justice. The comparison illuminates posture, scale and social function, while retaining the distinction between Mangaaka and the broader category nkisi nkondi. Alisa LaGamma’s 2008 article in the Metropolitan Museum Journal places this corpus within Kongo history and nineteenth-century political transformations. General typological names and the identification of a specific class each have their own significance.

The history of preservation is equally revealing. The Metropolitan’s study of the deconsecration of Mangaaka figures shows that removing ritual substances could form part of an object’s history. Empty cavities and missing materials therefore require documentary study alongside examination of physical condition. For the archival work, recorded materials and provenance remain the points of reference. Museum comparisons clarify the questions to ask of an object, without replacing its documentation with a ritual history reconstructed through analogy.

References and comparative works

Alisa LaGamma, “The Recently Acquired Kongo Mangaaka Power Figure”, The Metropolitan Museum Journal, 43, 2008.

Metropolitan Museum of Art, Nkisi, inv. 1979.206.127.

Metropolitan Museum of Art, Deconsecration of Mangaaka Figures in Africa, 2015.

Related insights

African wood sculpture: material, patina and conservation

Hemba Statues: Ancestors, Lineage and Monumentality in African Sculpture

The Kongo nkisi nkondi in the Dalton Somaré archive, dated to the second half of the nineteenth century, allows sculpture to be studied through the relationship between carving and added materials.
