Carved in schist in the second\u2013third century, under the Kushan dynasty, it measures 28 \u00d7 16 centimetres. Mara\u2019s advance and its failure appear together: the challenge to Enlightenment becomes an episode expressed through postures, weapons and relationships between figures.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The gallery\u2019s record distinguishes two moments. On the right, Mara is armed and surrounded by warriors, while his son tries to dissuade him; on the left, he appears defeated, with his sword bent. Repeating the protagonist allows the sculptor to represent before and after on the same surface. Reading the panel therefore involves following changes in gesture as well as the placement of the figures. Their arrangement gives the story a temporal structure.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This approach belongs to the visual culture of Gandharan Buddhist complexes. Reliefs incorporated into stupa architecture accompanied worshippers with episodes from the Buddha\u2019s life. Movement around the monument brought successive images into relation; within each panel, the sculptor organised events into a composition that maintained the clarity of the narrative, even in a crowded space.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A comparison is provided by the four panels showing Scenes from the Life of the Buddha at the National Museum of Asian Art, accession F1949.9a\u2013d, dated to the late second\u2013early third century. In the Enlightenment panel, Mara\u2019s army surrounds the Buddha, whose right hand touches the earth. The museum series and the Dalton Somar\u00e9 work present the same episode through different compositions: the former centres the action on the Buddha, while the latter makes the sequence of attack and defeat particularly clear.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The comparison separates the subject from the choices made in telling its story. Victory over Mara remains central, while the density of the scene, the distribution of protagonists and the gestures directing the viewer change. In the gallery\u2019s panel, the bent sword gains significance because it answers the weapon held before the assault.
