Punu masks from southern Gabon are distinguished by pale faces and elaborate coiffures. In mukudj images, kaolin links feminine beauty with the spiritual and ancestral world. White pigment contributes to the transformation of the face: an idealised physiognomy, shaped according to shared standards of elegance, assumes a character beyond everyday life during dance. Ancestral remembrance and admiration for feminine beauty meet within the same image.<\/p>\n

The face follows a carefully balanced structure. A broad forehead, half-closed eyes, a defined nose and a restrained mouth are connected through smoothly modelled surfaces. Scarification and coiffure provide defining details, while the masses of the hair extend the profile and articulate the silhouette. The composed expression arises from this measured arrangement, in which precise details support the harmony of the whole.<\/p>\n

Performance is essential to understanding the mask. Dancers wear it while appearing on stilts, accompanied by costumes and movements requiring considerable skill. Height, rhythm and acrobatics give the carved face a presence unlike that of an isolated object. The contrast between its calm expression and the dancer\u2019s energy brings together the beauty of the sculpture and the ability of the performer.<\/p>\n
