The central oval, lateral extensions and elements above and below the face form a rhythmic composition in which each part contributes to the balance of the whole. This structure offers a productive way to examine sculptural solutions beyond naturalistic imitation and to relate them to changes in early twentieth-century European painting.

Kpelye masks, also recorded under spellings such as kpeliye’e, belong to Senufo traditions in Côte d’Ivoire, Mali and Burkina Faso. Their idealised faces, often feminine in character, incorporate geometric, animal and ornamental elements. Scarification, coiffure and proportions reflect recognised standards of beauty, while the extensions enlarge the facial structure and strengthen its visual clarity during dance. Fine carving reveals the sculptor’s ability to connect small details with continuous surfaces.

These masks appear in initiatory, commemorative and public settings, with differences between communities and local traditions. Their association with Poro, an important educational and social institution, accompanies uses in funerary ceremonies and entertainment. Fibre costumes and the dancer’s movements complete the image. Through performance, the carved face brings together beauty, ancestral remembrance and social relationships.

A visual resemblance to a Cubist painting does not by itself establish that a particular mask served as the artist’s model. The comparison is most useful when it clarifies different approaches to the organisation of form. Kpelye frontal structure and articulated volumes follow principles developed within Senufo traditions, while Cubism addresses questions specific to European painting. Bringing them into dialogue highlights the masks’ sculptural achievement and African art’s contribution to modernism while keeping their respective histories clear.

Bibliography and comparisons

William Rubin, Primitivism in 20th Century Art.

Robert Goldwater, Primitivism in Modern Art.

Metropolitan Museum of Art, Kpeliye’e face mask, Senufo

Related insights

Picasso and African Art: African masks and the birth of modernism

African Art and the European Avant-Garde

African masks: ritual function and formal language

Dan Masks: Spirit, Initiation and Performative Presence

Comparison between Senufo Kpelye masks and Cubism centres on the construction of the face through planes, projections and geometric relationships.
