The carved figure was attached to or positioned above a relic container, serving as a guardian and protector. The term “reliquary”, often applied to the sculpture alone, is therefore understood through the relationship between guardian image, vessel and ancestral remains: together they formed a ritual ensemble.

The figure consists of a wooden core covered with metal, principally copper and brass, with iron also present in some examples. The frontal face, lateral extensions and lower section, often an open lozenge, form a strongly planar structure. Smooth sheets, strips and worked surfaces alternate luminous areas with fine textures. Metal carried prestige and honoured the ancestors through the use of valued materials.

The economy of the figure accommodates considerable invention. Head outlines, extensions, eyes and the arrangement of metal coverings distinguish individual works and regional traditions. Contrasts between flat surfaces and shallow relief animate the face, while light changes its appearance. Artistic quality is evident in precise transitions and in the relationship between the overall design and the details of the metalwork.

Kota images attracted European artists and collectors in the early twentieth century for their geometry and combination of materials. This reception forms a chapter of their history separate from the ancestral practices for which they were made. Comparison with Fang figures reveals two approaches to guarding relics: the fully developed sculptural body of Fang works and the predominantly frontal Kota structure. Maintaining this distinction allows the originality of each tradition to be appreciated.

Bibliography and comparisons

Louis Perrois, Arts du Gabon.

Smithsonian National Museum of African Art, Reliquary Guardian Figure, Kota

Related insights

Fang Guardian Figures: Byeri, Ancestors and Sculptural Synthesis

Gabon: Kota, Punu and Lumbu

Hemba Statues: Ancestors, Lineage and Monumentality in African Sculpture

Kota guardian images, frequently known as mbulu ngulu, belong to traditions of ancestral relic preservation in Gabon and neighbouring regions.
