Picasso and African Art: Masks and the Birth of Modernism<\/strong><\/p>\n

The relationship between Picasso and African art is a central issue in the history of European modernism. It should not be understood as simple imitation. Picasso encountered African masks and sculptures at a moment when he was already questioning Western naturalistic representation. African works offered a radical confirmation: the face and the body could be constructed as presence, sign and structure rather than as optical appearance.<\/p>\n

Les Demoiselles d\u2019Avignon<\/em> is often considered a turning point. In parts of the painting the face becomes mask-like, angular and discontinuous. The question is not to identify a single source, but to understand how African sculpture contributed to the possibility of a non-naturalistic form capable of acting on space and perception.<\/p>\n

Today this relationship must be read critically. The European reception of African art was shaped by colonial contexts, ethnographic museums and unequal cultural relations. Studying Picasso and African art means recognizing the decisive role of African sculpture in modernism while restoring the historical and ritual autonomy of the African works themselves.<\/p>\n
