These functions may coexist within a sacred complex: a narrative scene recalls a particular event, while an individual image focuses attention on the figure being venerated.

Identification begins with gestures, clothing and attributes. Buddha images often show monastic robes, whereas many bodhisattvas wear crowns and jewellery. There are exceptions, including crowned Buddhas, so each feature must be considered alongside the others within a particular tradition.

Materials and dimensions also offer clues to a work’s intended setting. A figure incorporated into an architectural scheme raises different questions from a small metal image. Stone, stucco and metal allow different methods of working and have different preservation histories. Studying them helps establish how a sculpture was made, displayed and used, alongside the interpretation of its religious subject.

Works documented by the gallery distinguish these functions through specific examples. The Gandharan relief of Mara’s assault organises an episode from the Buddha’s life; the ninth-century standing Buddha from western Kashmir presents an independent copper-alloy figure. In the first, relationships among characters guide a narrative reading; in the second, robe, posture and protective gesture define the presence of the sacred image.

The fourteenth-century Tibetan Sakya lama introduces another type, the religious teacher. Monastic robes, the book supported by a lotus and the teaching gesture evoke the transmission of the Dharma. Buddhist imagery thus includes representations of teachers and lineages alongside Buddhas and bodhisattvas. Classifying subjects provides an initial orientation; comparison between figures, reliefs and portraits clarifies the different ways sculpture participates in memory, teaching and devotional practice.

References and comparisons

Metropolitan Museum of Art, Buddhism and Buddhist Art

Metropolitan Museum of Art, Tibet and India

Related insights

Pala art: Buddhist sculpture and images of compassion in eastern India

Buddhist manuscripts of Nepal: the covers of the Prajñāpāramitā

The art of Gandhara

The iconography of the Buddha

Mudras in Buddhist sculpture

Indo-Buddhist sculpture: the formation and circulation of models

Buddhist sculpture includes images intended for worship, figures used in meditation and reliefs recounting episodes from the Buddha’s life.
