Kota, Punu and Lumbu traditions show how distinct artistic solutions developed within an area shaped by contact and exchange. The custody of relics, masquerade and the making of ritual figures required images suited to particular purposes. Comparison reveals both formal variety and the relationships between materials, use and standards of beauty.

Kota guardian images, made from wooden structures covered with copper and brass, protected containers of ancestral relics. The frontal face and its extensions create a predominantly planar figure, animated by reflections and differences between metal sheets and worked surfaces. The value of metal contributed to the honour accorded to ancestors. Geometry and workmanship belong to a ritual ensemble that also included the container and its contents.

Punu masks derive their strength from facial modelling, white pigment and elaborate coiffures. Feminine beauty is idealised through smooth surfaces, balanced proportions and carefully worked details. Stilt dancing, completed by costume and movement, transforms the sculpture into a public image raised above its viewers. The ancestral dimension is expressed through performance, in a manner distinct from Kota guardianship.

The Lumbu, living in southwestern Gabon and the Republic of the Congo, share certain practices and repertoires with neighbouring peoples while maintaining a recognisable artistic production. Alongside white masks, their works include figures, reliquary images and amulets. The construction of faces and bodies, hairstyles and materials allows regional affinities and differences to be studied without treating Lumbu works as undifferentiated variants of Punu sculpture.

Comparative observation shows how relationships with the spiritual world take shape in very different objects. A metal-covered figure attached to relics, a face appearing in dance and a sculpture used in another ritual practice have distinct ways of being kept, displayed and recognised. This variety is central to Gabon’s artistic heritage and provides a concrete basis for appreciating the quality of individual works.

Bibliography and comparisons

Louis Perrois, Arts du Gabon.

Alisa LaGamma, Eternal Ancestors: The Art of the Central African Reliquary.

Metropolitan Museum of Art, Eternal Ancestors, exhibition works

Charlotte Grand-Dufay, Les Lumbu: un art sacré = Bungeelë yi bayisi, 2016, Smithsonian catalogue

Related insights

Punu Masks: White Face, Ritual Presence and Feminine Memory

Fang Guardian Figures: Byeri, Ancestors and Sculptural Synthesis

Kota Reliquary Figures: memory, metal and abstraction

Gabon is a major region for the study of sculpture in west-central Africa.
