Padmapani, \u201cthe lotus bearer\u201d, is a form of Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva of compassion. The flower, held by its stem or placed beside the shoulder, is his best-known attribute and evokes purity and awakening.<\/p>\n

The figure often wears elaborate ornaments and headdresses. In Mahayana Buddhism, the bodhisattva ideal links the path towards Buddhahood with a commitment to the welfare of all beings. This helps explain Avalokiteshvara\u2019s devotional role more precisely than a general description of benevolence.<\/p>\n

Other sacred figures also hold lotuses. Identifying Padmapani therefore requires additional clues, including, when present, the small image of the Buddha Amitabha in his crown or hair. Gestures, proportions and the treatment of ornaments can then help distinguish regional interpretations. Iconographic identification and stylistic attribution address different questions and require specific comparisons.<\/p>\n

Two archival works give this distinction a concrete form. In the sixth-century Padmapani from the Swat Valley<\/a>, the lotus and Buddha image on the crown accompany lalitasana and the right hand brought towards the face. This small bronze, 23 centimetres high, organises the figure through the arrangement of the legs and inclination of the head. The contained gesture directs attention towards the face, while the attributes establish the bodhisattva\u2019s identity.<\/p>\n

In the eleventh-century Pala Padmapani<\/a>, measuring 47 centimetres and carved in black schist, six arms distribute gestures and attributes around the body. The composition opens laterally within the stele\u2019s frame. This different articulation preserves Padmapani\u2019s identity while showing how forms of Avalokiteshvara are expressed through programmes of varying complexity. Comparing metal and stone, dimensions and number of limbs gives regional interpretations a tangible basis for study.<\/p>\n
