Among the most recognisable are the ushnisha, the protuberance at the top of the head, and the urna, the mark between the eyebrows. Elongated earlobes and monastic robes recur in many representations.

The combination of these features varies with period and region. Hairstyles, the treatment of robes and bodily proportions allow comparisons between images of the same subject. Crowned and jewelled Buddhas also occur, so monastic dress is not a universal criterion for identification.

Seated or standing posture and hand gestures complete the interpretation of the figure. In a fragmentary work, surviving features should be distinguished from those that can only be hypothesised. Iconographic analysis identifies the subject; stylistic and technical study refines its historical context. A general impression of serenity or balance cannot replace either approach.

The ninth-century standing Buddha from western Kashmir allows these elements to be followed in their actual arrangement. The ushnisha and urna define the head; elongated earlobes frame the face; the right hand forms abhaya mudra and the left holds the robe. The figure is recognisable through the combination of signs, while the advanced knee and treatment of the mantle introduce the level of formal construction.

The third–fourth-century Gandharan Buddha in pigmented stucco offers a comparison for modelling and surface. Wavy hair and traces of colour contribute to the face’s appearance within another regional tradition and technical process. Placing the works together clarifies the distinction between iconographic sign and sculptural solution: the subject is shared, while ways of forming hair, clothing and facial transitions belong to the history of individual productions. Identification thus becomes the starting point for a broader analysis.

References and comparisons

Metropolitan Museum of Art, Recognizing the Gods

Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Head of a Buddha

Related insights

Schist, stucco and colour in Gandharan sculpture

Kashmir sculpture: copper-alloy images in the western Himalayas

Buddhist sculpture

Mudras in Buddhist sculpture

The art of Gandhara

Padmapani, the lotus bearer

Tara in Buddhist sculpture

The Buddha’s image has features that indicate his awakened state.
