These exchanges took different forms across regions and periods, producing traditions that need distinct historical frameworks.

An image of Shiva or the Buddha may share attributes with Indian examples while displaying proportions, hairstyles and facial features characteristic of a local setting. Iconography identifies the subject; composition and workmanship help distinguish its regional interpretation.

Khmer, Mon and Javanese sculpture, among other traditions, cannot therefore be understood through a single concept of adaptation. Chronologies and comparative works are needed. Broad or alternative geographical attributions, such as those sometimes attached to sculptures without an archaeological context, should also make the degree of uncertainty explicit.

The seventh–eighth-century head of Harihara and tenth-century torso of a male Khmer deity, documented in the Dalton Somaré archive, provide two comparisons for Cambodia. Both are sandstone, but preserve different parts of a figure. The head identifies Harihara through the headdress divided between Vishnu’s mitre and Shiva’s chignon; the torso makes anatomical construction and the design of the sampot available for analysis.

Their comparison separates subject from sculptural language. In the head, frontal presentation and compact features coexist with distinct attributes. In the torso, shoulders, pectorals and abdomen form broad surfaces, while the garment’s folds introduce a denser geometric rhythm. The chronological distance invites developments in Cambodian production to be studied through specific examples. A regional account built on materials and surviving parts provides a more precise orientation to Southeast Asia’s varied sculptural traditions.

References and comparisons

Hiram W.
