Yaour\u00e9 art and ritual context<\/h2>\n

Yaour\u00e9 masks from Ivory Coast represent one of the highest achievements of African Art<\/strong><\/a> in West Africa, characterized by a refined formal language and strong symbolic content. These sculptures belong to a complex ritual system connected with the cult of the yu<\/em> spirit, guarantor of social balance, fertility and cosmic order.<\/p>\n

Yaour\u00e9 tradition generally distinguishes two main categories of masks: the je<\/em>, often polychrome, and the lo<\/em>, characterized by a dark and uniform surface. This distinction reflects ritual and symbolic differences within ceremonial practices.<\/p>\n

This portrait mask is distinguished by the purity of its forms and the rigorous symmetry of the composition. The oval face is structured around a long and slender nose, the central element organizing the visual balance of the work. The arched eyebrows and flowing lines help create an idealized image suspended between realism and abstraction.<\/p>\n

A distinctive element is the presence of a pair of stylized birds on the top of the mask. These birds, often represented drinking from a single vessel, symbolize harmony between nature and society and the balance between beauty and order.<\/p>\n

The fine facial scarifications, the hairstyle rendered through vertical incisions and the barely indicated beard define an idealized and highly codified face. The whole reveals extremely sophisticated formal control, in which naturalistic elements are transformed into symbolic signs.<\/p>\n
