African and Asian art in contemporary collecting

Collecting African art in Italy and Indo-Buddhist art represents one of the most complex and stimulating experiences in the international art world. The sculptures presented in this catalogue create a dialogue between two major artistic traditions, revealing their connections and expressive potential.

At the beginning of the 20th century, artists of the Parisian avant-garde were the first to recognise the power of African art. In opposition to academic traditions, they embraced these works as a revelation, introducing the term “Art Nègre”. The revolutionary impact of these forms was later confirmed by major exhibitions, museum recognition and their presence in prestigious collections. However, approaching African art is not immediate. Its apparent simplicity, the absence of identifiable authors and the use of essential materials require a refined and informed gaze.

Asian art, once freed from the misconception of being distant or secondary, reveals itself as deeply connected to our cultural heritage. From Gandhara to India and Southeast Asia, it emerges from the encounter between Greco-Roman traditions and the philosophical and religious visions of Central Asia and the Indian subcontinent. This intersection highlights the role of art as a space of dialogue and cultural exchange.

In today’s open and cosmopolitan context, African and Asian art can be rediscovered with a renewed perspective. Their formal power and historical depth offer new opportunities for a conscious and international approach to collecting. Engaging with these works means embarking on a journey of knowledge: an aesthetic and intellectual adventure that defines the true meaning of art collecting. This catalogue is connected with Dalton Somaré’s participation in AMART Milano 2018.
