Bamana art and initiation societies
Bamana art from Mali is one of the most complex and conceptually sophisticated expressions of African Art connected with the initiation societies of West Africa.
The wooden works associated with the Ntomo system form a highly codified visual language, in which sculptural form becomes a vehicle for moral teaching, social identity and cosmological knowledge.
The Ntomo society
The Ntomo society belongs to the system of Jow initiation societies and regulates the passage from childhood to adulthood.
Addressed to young boys before circumcision, it introduces the fundamental principles of self-control, ethical behaviour and the social role of the individual.
Dyo Kunu and ritual symbolism
This mask belongs to the ritual group known as Dyo Kunu, or “cult heads”, associated with initiation practices that remained active.
These objects are placed under the symbolic protection of the primordial hyena, a mythical figure embodying archaic, ambivalent and founding knowledge.
Iconography of the Ntomo mask
Ntomo masks have a highly codified structure: domed forehead, pronounced nose, elongated ears and open jaws.
The distinctive element is the group of vertical crests, generally seven, which refer to the mythical twins of the original ancestor and symbolize the cognitive and moral capacities of the initiate.
Abstraction and formal construction
The form is built through a strong geometrization of volumes, in which naturalism is completely surpassed in favour of symbolic synthesis.
The compact surfaces and massive structure give the mask an intense visual presence, associated with a ritual and archaic dimension.
Influence on Modern Art
This formal language, based on abstraction and simplification, exercised a significant influence on European art in the early 20th century.
The avant-gardes and Cubism recognized in Bamana sculpture an alternative model of plastic construction to Western naturalism.
Context and collecting
This Bamana Ntomo mask is a fundamental example of African initiatory art, in which sculpture, myth and social structure merge into a single symbolic system.
