African art at BRAFA 2024
On the occasion of BRAFA Art Fair 2024, Dalton Somaré presents the exhibition “Matter and Form”, dedicated to the essential relationship between African sculpture and the materials from which it is made.
Matter and form in African sculpture
The title refers to the deep connection between the plastic power of archaic and classical African sculpture and its material, wood, patina, and traces of use, which shapes not only its formal appearance but also its aesthetic presence and artistic value.
In these works, material is not merely a support, but an integral part of meaning: surface, volume, and transformation over time all contribute to defining the identity of the sculpture.
A visual dialogue
The sculptures are presented alongside large-format photographs, conceived to explore and reveal this relationship between form and matter.
The dialogue between object and image allows for the isolation of details, textures, and sculptural qualities, offering a closer and more conscious reading of the works.
An exhibition project
This project reflects the research of Dalton Somaré, long focused on formal quality and the material dimension of African art.
Participation in BRAFA Art Fair provides an important opportunity to present these works within a high-level international context.
